Since Ken lacks that manga info as he says, "I only have four manga volumes, and I'm rather lacking in manga information." I will give it to you. There is no Rotted version. Sorry. It will have better headings than his FAQ and a link-tag system. You are very welcome to ask questions.

This is based on Alex Glover's original translations and the revised translations plus my own translation. This is also prompted by Ken Aromdee since he knows all about the anime and plenty of people from reading his stuff knows more about the anime than the manga. I decided to redo his FAQ with the same kind of spirit of giving info, with the kind of stuff he put on, only with a manga bend to it. It's about high time that we, the fans, go to the original, original.

I do have a detailed bit on Mixx/Tokyopop too, with Stu Levy's comments, so it's not second hand and you get to see his first hand comments that he sent me. Thanks for those Stu! Also a summary of the acts since none are avalible on the net that are comprehensive. This is all on the assumption that you HAVEN'T read my website at all so I will be repeating info if you have already read my site. This is for the reason that I want all the info I can cram into this thing and so it's independent and can stand alone, just as Ken's can. You are free to take any info you feel like, but do credit this FAQ and the other people involved (i.e. Ken Aromdee and Alex Glover). It is all known info. I will have this in Rot13 for all spoilers as Ken Aromdee does.

My credentials: I have the manga translations from Alex Glover and have read them all. I have 1-18 of the Japanese (that's all of them) and all of the Tokyopop. I also have all of the Shinsouban (New Volumes) and the Artbooks.

I have read all available episode summaries on Hitoshi Doi's site. I have watched the anime (Japanese: SMS- SM Sailor stars, and missing episodes as well as the butchered episodes for the end of SM; dub all current available episodes). I know all changes to the episodes SM-SMR pretty much by heart. (I'm working on SMS-SMSS) I plan to get the DVD version of the episodes from Pioneer of the episodes when I have the money (more money problems).

I have the subbed and dubbed Movies, on both VHS, and DVD.

I also worked for Tokyopop for about 3 months. (Intern and later hired for one month.)

NOTES:

- All stuff from this point on is in Japanese style and is bent a bit towards the Japanese way conventions. Japanese names are done Japanese style: Family Name FIRST, then Given Name. Also anything involving Mixx or foreign countries is done Japanese item first (as it was in real life) then Mixx/other country

- Just in case you were wondering I am not doing this for money. "Sailor Moon", "Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon", "Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon" and "Bishojo Senshi Sera Mun" and the characters contained within the manga are the copyright of Takeuchi Naoko and the respective companies in association with her.

- This document uses minimal HTML for the convenience of copying. The info with the tables are therefore done in two ways. One with the tables and one without, for a simple copy-paste. If you want to make this HTML heavy go ahead, you are very welcome to, just credit this FAQ.

- I do not want requests for the latest version of this FAQ. All request will be deleted.

- All requests for translations will be deleted.

- I'm bound to have made some minor mistakes here and there. You are welcome to correct me on the information, but please when doing so cite the number of the section, the title of the section, the approximate place that the mistake was found, AND you must give me a citation of where you found the correct info if necessary (For manga it HAS to be page number; for sites: the EXACT URL where you found it). (Also please state if you want to be credited with the name you prefer.)

PART I: What Sailor Moon in the manga is about as supposed to the anime counter part.

Note about Pronunciation of the Japanese title:
- the first kanji symbols is "Bi" (pretty, or beautiful) 美
- the next kanji is sho (long o, so it's ou since it's inside of a word)) 少
- the next kanji is jo ((so together "shojo" (girl) (pronounced shoujo, as most people spell it anyway to make sure no one mispronounces it))女
- the next kanji is sen; the next kanji is shi (together "senshi" pronounced sen-shee (almost rhymes with banshee) [Meaning soldier, warrior] 戦士
- the next one is katakana for "se"; the next one is also katakana for "ra" (so together they would read "sera" though you can make a case for "Sela" since there is no difference between "l" and "r" in Japanese. It would most closely be pronounced: "Serl-a" with no emphasis on either syllable) セーラ
- the next symbol is katakana for mu (though you can add another u because of the - thing) ム
the next is katakana for n' (the only kana consonant that can stand alone without a vowel) ン, but most put it as n except when part of the word e.g. Ten'ou (Tenou means something entirely different because of the "no") So that's mu-n, muun, or mun. ムン
- Together: Bi-shooh-joh Se-n-shee Seeh-raa-moo-n; Bishoujo Senshi Sera Mun or Bishojo Senshi Sailor Moon or Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon. All are correct and pronounced the same in Japanese. 美少女戦士セーラームーン
- The meaning: Pretty Soldier Sailormoon

Note about reading the Japanese Manga:
To Americans the Japanese manga might seem to read "backwards" i.e. right to left. That means that the cover seems to be on backwards when it arrives and the binding is on the right, not the left. The contents also read the same. The panels read right to left as well as the vertical text. However, the horizontal text reads left to right. In the Tokyopop manga this is changed to accommodated the English speaking reader (flipping the manga to read the "American way").

The manga version of Sailor Moon is the original version created by Takeuchi Naoko. The story behind the creation of Sailor Moon basically goes like this:

Naoko read Rori no Seishun [Lori's Story] and Honoo no Romance [Flame of Romance] both by Uehara Kimiko and wanted to do girls of justice. (You can find about Rori no Seishun at http://mattari60s.blogspot.com/. She also liked drawing dark scapes and outer space. When she mentioned this to her editor, whom she calls Osa-P. He asked "Won't you do Soldiers of Justice in Sailor suits." She took the suggestion and in 1991 she created "Code Name wa Sailor V." "Code Name wa Sailor V" was more of a success than she or Nakayoshi bargained for, so much so that talk of an anime for "Code Name wa Sailor V." It even was published in the Shinsouban's notes that there was going to be a Sailor V anime (called "Bishoujo Senshi Sailor V"). Takeuchi-sensei must have been very pleased upon hearing this, so much so that she started the manga again, with a new hero: Sailor Moon.

She decided to create more senshi (from the questioning of Toei and the suggestion of her editor, Osa-P): Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars and Sailor Jupiter, and finally Sailor V (who turned out to be Sailor Venus) and Tuxedo Kamen (mask) (This was her own idea and her own invention. (many of her mangaka friends thought this was a weird name for him, but she stuck by him anyway!)) to fill out the story. AND she continued to work on "Code Name Wa Sailor V."

The first issue of "Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon" showed up in Nakayoshi's February 1992 issue. This series was popular too, and in March 7, 1992 of that year Toei started production of "Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon" instead of "Bishoujo Senshi Sailor V." At the end of the first season of Sailor Moon Toei and Takeuchi-sensei tried to end the series, but it was still gaining popularity, so Takeuchi-sensei was asked to continue the series by Nakayoshi (syndicates of Kodansha). She hadn't done a long series like this before (at most her volumes were trilogies and a few short stories here and there). But she jumped at the opportunity to do it. Though she did complain about it a lot she admitted that she grew a lot and was a much better mangaka for it. The fan support kept her going. She also had a chance to draw and write to her fans, the kind of stuff that she loved.

Eventually with the popularity of the anime, the manga was shipped across continents and started to show up on a lot of new otaku's book shelves. When Takeuchi saw this she was even more delighted and wrote a note about it in her manga. When she ran out of ideas for a new plot line she decided to end the manga. It ended March 1997. It was replaced with "Mizuiro no Tamago," a completely unrelated manga.

In North America, Tokyopop did the manga in the same way that Nakayoshi did. They put out a magazine, not sure of it's success in the States, and then they put out Pocket Tokyopop (copyrighted) (tankoubon: compiled small books of the manga usually with a slip jacket in the Japanese version). The story of Sailor Moon is running in two magazines: Tokyopopzine (starting with Japanese volume 1) and Smile (starting with Japanese volume 12) which is termed Sailor Moon SuperS. They are all renumbered so Volume 12 of the Japanese version is Volume 1 of SuperS the Tokyopop version.

Tokyopop Entertainment used better quality paper for the Pocket Tokyopop (copyrighted) than the tankoubon. They also inserted new interviews with Takeuchi. badly at the convention. To get more info on that matter read the appendix.

UNLIKE the anime, the manga does not have season titles! They do have arc titles, however, these changed with the indecisiveness of Takeuchi-sensei. For example, classically it was, "Sailor Moon", "Black Moon", "Infinity" and "Stars". However with the update of Takeuchi's website she's renamed these arcs again to, "Dark Kingdom", "Black Moon", "Death Busters" and what I assume will be "Sailor Animamates." as of this date. However, the Shinsouban read the same titles as the original.

PART II: About Takeuchi Naoko- The mangaka of Sailor Moon

Major sources for this section: Alex Glover's translations of Princess Takeuchi Naoko Back-to-Society Punch!! and his translation of the liner notes (in all of the manga).

Synopsis of Takeuchi Naoko:
Takeuchi Naoko is a female, now currently in her early forties. She was born March 15, 1967 in Kofu city in Yamanashi prefecture. That means she's a Pisces. Her blood type is A. Her Chinese astrological sign is a sheep (Rabbit is 1963).

History :

She seems to come from a well off family. She definitely doesn't seem poor, after all Juuban is a relatively rich district, which is where she and the senshi live. She also built herself a house, now that must have cost a lot, it costs tons in America!

In 1986, while she was attending Kyoritsu Yakka (pharmacy) University, she made her debut as manga-ka with "Love Call" which received "Nakayoshi New manga-ka award." It was published in "Nakayoshi Deluxe" September 1986 issue. At that time she also worked at Shiba Daijingu, a shrine a few blocks from her university.

After graduation, she took a job as pharmacist at Keio Hospital. Her College Thesis is "Heightened Effects of Thrombolytic Actions Due to Ultrasound" She is a licensed pharmacist (though she admitted that she's a little rusty ^^;;). She says she still loved drawing manga but since she worked hard to earn her degree, she wanted to try that, too.

Although she was working full time, her editor (Not Osa-P back then.) continued to encourage Naoko-sensei to draw manga.

Her works:
She created Sailor Moon and many other manga.

Toki Meca (January 2005-May 2006)
      *Dates provided by Alex Glover

Her family:
Her father's name is Kenji, her younger brother is Shingo and her mother is Ikuko (who she thinks has really nice clothes). They are the same names as the characters in Sailor Moon for Usagi's family. (No, they never show up in the DiC dub or the Tokyopop manga with those names.).

Her marital status:
She likes guys that are dark, mysterious, and serious, but then put in a comment that any guy who asks her to marry her must be a nice person! She did fall in love during her break from work. She worked for Togashi Yoshihiro for a while to become a great mangaka. He proposed to her and she said yes. They married January 1999. They are now married. She now also has a son.

Problems with Kodansha:
She is now working intermittently with a new company since Kodansha lost her manuscripts, which she wanted back. She said she will not be doing any more Sailormoon. She left for Shueisha. This was around the time she was also dating Togashi-sensei. When the rights for Sailormoon were about to expire Kodansha made a deal with Takeuchi-sensei to return. She was able to finally print her Materials Collection in that time and resumed by starting a new manga, Love Witch. Love Witch dissolved without explanation.

Princess Takeuchi Naoko Back-to-Society Punch!!:
Many seem not to understand this manga that well. It is comic, because Punch! means funny. She does take advantage of this and takes the meaning of it literally too. She calls the installments rounds, as in a boxing match. She also punches various people into the sky. In doing so, I think she's also making jokes about herself very subtlely. She says that she is at peace with Kodansha. She also said in her second Round that it wasn't exactly all accurate and she stretched a few things, such as her first drawing of Togashi-sensei. It is natural for her to do this manga it's easy for her, she doesn't have to make up plots and it is very much like her liner notes in Sailor Moon. She also has the character designs all laid out for her in front of her face. In the manga she calls herself hime and represents herself with a rabbit. She calls Togashi, ouji which means prince (she says because he looks like the prince from Level E). He's represented by a dog. Both Prince and Princess are written in kanji.

PGSM and Shinsouban:
Pretty Guardian Sailormoon started and she started to produce art for this as well as redoing her Sailor Moon volumes. She redrew many panels and revamped the story in places that she felt flawed. She also helped with the production of the Live Action Sailormoon, nicknamed PGSM. It was also said by Sawai Miyuu-san that she helped with the costume designs and according to Myuu-san, she also helped with words of encouragement. This consumed a lot of her time, so she didn't do any additional manga.

After PGSM:
She resumed with another manga, this time Toki*Meca which she developed with Togashi. Togashi-sensei had a similar idea when they were dating. He even did drawings as an early concept sketch of the character for Takeuchi-sensei. However, his idea did not pass approval of his editor and hers did. Around the time she was producing this manga, she was helping him to manage his properties, so installments of this manga were intermittent. It is notable that Osabu came back towards the end of the manga. The influence of both of these men's styles can be seen in the final result. For example the square panels are an influence of Togashi-sensei. The dynamic interlocking is an influence of Osabu who never let Takeuchi-sensei slack off. She also produced a Children's book for her son with her husband who did the pictures for his birthday.

Currently (as of 2008)
She is mainly working on the official website. The official website is updated on the first of the month (in Japanese time) and the fifteenth. There are times when the updates are a bit late. She is managing her and her husband's properties through PNP as well as being a fulltime mother. The official Sailormoon updates usually consist of redoing and drawing the splash page and animating with flash various cgames and the acts with the help of the Bandai Staff. She writes a scrolling message at the top each month as well.

Personal interests:

She believes in astrology (said so at the San Diego Comic Con convention) and belonged to the astronomy club in high school. She also belonged to the drawing club. (she's always loved drawing and manga. She likes the drawing better than the writing, I think.) She really loves collecting antiques and has a fondness for lamps (like Hotaru-chan) and mirrors. She loved mirrors so much that she decided to base the third set of enemies on them. She also likes getting her hair and nails done. She also says that she likes to sleep late (when she can) and be lazy (not like her blood type), but wants to do a good job.. "Sleep away like Usagi". She has a lot of allergies. (Poor Takeuchi-sensei) She was on a lot of medication when she was doing Sailor Moon. (getting very little sleep doesn't help much)

She tends towards designer clothes (she said she really like Naomi Campbell's clothes and showed up in several designer clothes. Ruruna and Naruru of Hammer Price Shrine (Last Chibiusa Picture Diary installment) had designer suspenders and she mentioned several designer items in her Princess Takeuchi Naoko Back-to-Society Punch!!). She also loves to shop in general. She also likes dancing and going out to clubs.

She also says that she worries a lot and cited it as a hobby. When she is stressed out she reenergizes by going to oceanside to see the night view from Rainbow Bridge in Tokyo/Chiba Bay Area in her Ferrari or Porsche real fast . She also loves drawing rain scenes and she likes drawing dark scapes. She can make real odango-atama with hair pins. She said she wore them at a convention with a kimono on, but her mangaka friends thought she was entering a Cos play.

She loves manga. She did say, "I love manga freely." A lot of her friends are mangaka and she is friends with many of the seiyuu from Sailor Moon (many showed up at her wedding). She likes Sailor Moon the best out of all of her manga. Her favorite anime is Sailor Moon. She likes collecting Sailor Moon merchandise and fanfics. She likes getting Sailor Moon fan mail. She likes seeing Sailor Moon websites on the internet-see a theme yet? No one is a bigger fan of Sailor Moon than she is (Except, maybe.. her editor Osa-P, but he left Nakayoshi soon after Sailor Moon). Hey, for all the info on Sailor Moon she's THE expert! If she doesn't know it, then no one does! (No duhh, she created it!)

Dreams: To be a great manga artist, be completely financially dependant on her husband so she doesn't have to work (so much for that dream), to have a family, to be married (that already happened), and to be able to sleep late whenever she wants.

Personality:

Shy and indecisive (as she says in her liner notes). She seems very open once you get to know her. She seems to have tons of friends and a very genuine personality from what I've read about her and from her. She seems to know how to have fun and a good time while she's doing it, but that's my own opinion.

She says that she is most like Usagi. (which explains the representation of the rabbit) She was rather shy when she admitted that she liked Tuxedo Kamen-sama the best. She said that's because she likes guys in Tuxedos ^_^. (She also said Umino is really cute under those glasses... anyone want to date him now that she said that?) I would also guess she does like all of her characters for one reason or another. She also said she is least like Michiru-sama (though they are they same astrological sign!). She did put most of her personality into each and everyone of her characters.

PART IV: The original Japanese manga plot/ act summary

So the Japanese plot interests you? You keep hearing about: It's darker, They kill their enemies and her personality is different in the manga? Or you have the Japanese manga and have no clue what it has? Well, forget all that stuff we are going to look at the plot line in detail. If you still have questions look at the plot element questions to see if the answer is there. This section will take a while since I'm doing summaries for all 52 acts of the manga and a plot line. If you do read it and like it, do read the original manga. It's far better than any summary.

The plot for the Tokyopop manga was kept the same. The only difference is some of the translations are a little off and odango-atama has been translated to blondie (A Moon Star is Born), pigtail-head (replacement for odango-atama in the manga) and cow-tail head (replacement for lump-head), but we'll get into that later.

NOTES:
- All manga is bound on the right side of the book. It reads right to left.
- The frames also read right to left
- the vertical text reads right to left
- the horizontal text reads left to right
- on the cover:

PART V: First appearances, Transformation phrases, senshi attacks in the manga

This has the sailor first appearances. For Hotaru/Saturn, Chibiusa/Sailor Chibimoon, Chibichibi/Sailor Chibichibi, and Setsuna/Sailor Pluto I separated their appearances into two parts: senshi and domestic. They appear in different parts of the manga first as a human then as a senshi. These are the only characters that I separated this way because of such the wide space between the appearance of the two forms.

I did not give the pages for the Tokyopop manga. They will be posted later when the book version of the manga is finished.

*these go by first appearance of the actual character. If you want the appearance of the Sailor vs. domestic form look below. There is such a gap in between it, I see the need for it. When I see the need I'll separate all the Sailors, from their domestic forms. I'll also be doing it for the Tokyopop version of the manga, but only when the set is complete.

*In the manga they are never called Eternal Sailor (whatever) they are instead just upgraded. It is not clear if we should call them Eternal or Star or whatever.. Some people refer to them as Star Sailor (whatever) instead of Eternal... but neither one was specified in the manga, so it is hard to tell. I only used Eternal because that was the designation that I thought sounded the coolest and least confusing (Starlights). ^^;; Though most legally you could call them Super whatever.. even though the Sailor fuku is different.

** eukanuba in Dalnet #sailormoon on Irc provided me with the following info: The page numbers to Sailor Venus's and Sailor Mercury's attacks in volume 3 and Sailor Venus's transformation in that same volume. Thanks!

*** This Henshin Phrase was really never used in the manga.. the Three Talismans came together, (The orb, the mirror, and the sword) and she appeared in the sky. This is what I *assume* the henshin phrase would be.. actually it's really an excuse to show her first time as Sailor Saturn. ^.-

* In the Tokyopop Manga.. which several people have pointed out and heavily objected to, (uhh.. including me) She said that her name was really Serena, but most people call her Bunny. (Which I guess can justify Rini in the SuperS series... yeah, right!)

** I guess you can really call this an attack on her part, since it is BEFORE she officially becomes a Sailor. But I sort of see it as a premonition of her becoming a Sailor Senshi, which is why I put it in. ^_^

PART VI: In depth study of the Japanese culture and myths that surround the Sailor Moon Manga.

There's the moichi which has to do with rabbits on the moon one.. that one you should know by now. But here it is anyway.

You should know the following for Greek and Roman gods and goddesses.

The Three Talismans

The Japanese School System

The Japanese school system consists of a 6-3-3 system. That is to say Six years of elementary school. Three years of Junior High, and then three years of High School. For each level there is a hard exam that the students must pass to get into the next level. Competition can be fierce.

Teachers often discipline students and are allowed to--to a degree. Parents, especially mothers are involved with their children's school life, setting up PTA meetings and sorting out various community events.

The other thing to note is that school is year around with a long break in summer. The school session starts and ends in the beginning of April.

Schools encourage structure in the children. This means morning exercises and older children taking care of younger children during play time. There are also activities, such as origami.

Fights are resolved through children resolving it themselves. Teachers don't get involved in fights, but let other children resolve them. The thought is that one should understand how to get along with others. If a person is unreasonable, the children will cast that person out and not play with them.

PART VII: Changes from original manga to original anime and original Manga to Tokyopop Manga

Some of these things are really insane in attention to detail. I am not going to present any opinions if at all possible. I will merely point out what I find of both, and what I observe. Most of you will think I'm insane after this, but it is good to know. The purist is not me, just what one might say. ^_^

ORIGINAL MANGA TO Tokyopop MANGA

General changes:

The manga is flipped for the Tokyopop manga. (Inside and out). This is actually standard, and what makes the manga cost so much! (really, I mean it) As I stated, the frames, and the book are to us "backwards" all of the bubbles that read top to bottom have to be either changed, or the text has to accommodate to those bubbles. (Tokyopop does the latter). This makes it expensive. Though there was rumor that in England someone was going to do it the "Japanese way" but this was dropped.
Pro: You can read it the "American way".
Con: You lose the Japanese feel, all characters are left handed, and if you know Japanese culture, whenever you see Rei or any of the other senshi with a kimono, or yukata, the way that the top is crossed tells that they are ready for burial.
Purist says: I laugh! Ha! ha! lol OK! Who wants an American feel.. OK.. some people would want a left-handed world, but that's not reality, get out of your bubble!

The translations on the Tokyopop manga Americanize a bit. They really don't Americanize as much as the novels do (which I particularly don't like, no offense to Lianne Sentar). Actually Stuart Levy stated to me, that it could have been worse.. and it was pretty good. (Though one of the slip ups I pointed out to him included making Queen Serenity talk like an American teenager.) In terms of least Americanization SuperS tends to be better, though the exam battles I do recognize are very hard to translate without having context on Japanese culture. They do seem to be getting better as they go along (I'm referring to the tankoubon form, as I refuse to get the magazine form.)
Pro: Again the people immersed in American culture can stay and understand within the context of the culture.
Con: If you want to learn about Japan, and find out about other cultures, expand your interests, then Americanization isn't that good, and rather confusing. You won't know.
Purist says: Why are you trying to stick to your own culture. Besides Japan is cool! Don't be close-minded, look outside. (OK, maybe this has partially my opinion.. I've found that most people that favor NA, haven't seen the real thing, so at least check out two volumes)

The Tokyopop manga is translated into English. (that should be obvious).
Pro: No looking back and forth between the translation and the manga. (Some people stated this as a pain)
Con: Can't learn Japanese and there is more chance to catch mistakes of the translation.
Purist says: What do you need a translation for you should know Japanese. ^.- A less than purist would probably say, Of course you can learn Japanese from the tankoubon. What does the title look like, and what does it read? (Some people that were either not thinking or not very bright stated there was no way you could learn Japanese in this fashion. O_o; You mean that when I looked up the Nihonjin for Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon I was wrong?)

The original manga had a slip cover jacket. That meant that the cover was a different sheet of paper from the book. The actually cover of the book is green with dots on it, the name of the company (Kodansha), the name of the comic, the volume number, and then the mangaka's kanji. This is all in a shield-like emblem which lacks the white dots. The Tokyopop manga has the cover attached, so there's no separate piece of paper with the cover on it.
Pro: With the Tokyopop manga, you can't lose what you don't have. You either lose it all, or you don't. (I did this to a precious Japanese volume of mine.. separated the cover and the tankoubon, and now I can't find the tankoubon.. *sigh*)
Con: There are inside flaps on the original manga with pictures of the characters in Sailor Form, the only enemy that appears is Galaxia. On the back inside flap there are pictures of the seiyuu for the inner senshi, there are pictures of fans, Takeuchi-sensei, even a picture of the mirror that was used to tell the story of Nephrenia.
Purist says: Who wouldn't want to see Takeuchi-sensei?

Some of the covers are NOT the same on the Tokyopop manga as they are on the original manga. This is most noticeable with volume 1 front and back and volume 2 on the back. Though Tokyopop seems to be conforming after that to the original layout of the later manga.
Pro: If you buy both versions you can see the picture in color without buying the picture illustration volumes (but why would you want to do that?!?)
Con: you are missing out on the original color covers.
Purist says: Isn't it a desecration to the original, who would want to support that kind of thing?

The dimensions of the original books aren't the same as the Tokyopop manga. The original is 4.5" x 6.75", but the Tokyopop manga is 4.5" x 7.75". (I know an inch difference in the height). It probably has to do with the metric system or a choice by Stuart Levy Himself. Who knows.. (though I could ask)
Pro: harder to lose
Con: harder to fit into a pocket (that inch does make a difference)
Purist says: I don't really care get me my Japanese manga! ^.-

The paper quality on the Tokyopop manga is higher!
Pro: the lines are clearer against starch white paper, and harder to accidentally rip! The scans can be cleaner too.
Con: The shading isn't quite the same.
Purist says: I like the shading better in the Japanese manga.

Some new comments from Takeuchi Naoko-sensei. ??? (I'm not too sure on this one if it's true or not. Tokyopop better not be making things up. It does seem like it sometimes)
Pro: It's really nice having the comments directed at us instead of just the Japanese. Any new comments are wonderful.
Con: some of the old comments are replaced by the new ones.
Purist says: umm.. hard choice get the Japanese manga and then borrow someone's Tokyopop manga and then copy down what she says from that manga. (OK.. this is mean, but you get the idea)

The Tokyopop manga uses Dic names. (Amy, Raye, Lita, Mina, Rini, Darien). The outer senshi it's not clear. I've heard reports that they are Americanizing for the magazine, but then I've seen Michiru, Haruka, and Setsuna used in the manga, volume 13. (Though it should be noted most of the last names are kept, except for Darien's which is Shields)
Pro: new people to the manga that only know the dub will understand.
Con: The puns in the names are mostly lost, and therefore the majority of the jokes surrounding the names.
Purist says: Lose Takeuchi-sensei's cleverness? No way!

The Tokyopop manga uses scout sometimes instead of soldier. (Though the mixing of this particular thing is hard to control. It's up to the editor, not the translator in this case. In which case the translations should be kept separate in terms of Sailor Moon and Sailor Moon SuperS, because the translators are different.)
Pro: People that only know the dub will understand. The people that only know te dub will also learn the true meaning of senshi if they ever bother to earn about the original version before they realize it.
Con: It's annoying having the switching back and forth.
Purist says: We all know by now *senshi* means *soldier* or *warrior*. (In this case soldier, as it read Pretty Soldier Sailormoon on the merchandise.) We had enough abuse from Dic from switching back and forth. Besides by the Amazoness Quartet's VesVes, "Do you know what a Scout does? A Scout sells cookies and goes on camping trips to earn merit badges."

The inside fold outs don't appear in the Tokyopop manga. These are found in the originals on the inside of the front of the cover and the first page. They are usually folded three times. They can be considered extras, that most likely were done for this particular series, since I have yet to see it in any other manga. (though I bet there are same. They do show up in the art books later. (bigger and fuller in the composition too)
Pro: You can't mash up what you don't have. Besides they do show in the art books.
Con: These are the only other color pictures besides what is on the cover in the manga.
Purist says: I want to see how the pictures were cut down. Besides I heard that they differ slightly for the art books so I want to see how!

The beginning introductory pages on the characters don't appear.
Pro: If you don't want to see the pages, you don't have to turn them. Plus they are repetetive to some account.
Con: Usagi narrates these pages (which Alex Glover doesn't translate for us) There are also pictures of the senshi in SD form as well as some of the enemies.
Purist says: Anything cut is bad. Besides the chibi characters are cute.

Additional other little notes:

Volume 12 is translated the best and printed the best as far as I've seen so far.

This FAQ won't be complete until all of the manga are published in English, especially this section.

The Tokyopop manga did say something about V-babe, and used "My Name is Serena Tsukino, but everyone calls me Bunny". You can judge that for yourself.

Anything Eye on Tokyopop says about the manga, ignore, they are rather incoherent in this matter, and I suspect that they haven't replied to my e-mail because they wanted me to flame Tokyopop, and tell how horrible they are. I even offered a trade. Information on the changes I listed above (which they requested) for information on their organization. No reply. You can infer what you like from that.

Volume by volume specific changes and mistakes:

Note: I referenced Alex Glover for the original Japanese, however, he tends towards a more literal translation than Stuart Levy and some of the other translators. If there was or is any disagreement, I will mark it and explain.

It should also be stated that Alex Glover and the respective translators did the best they could, and tried to get a SENSE of the language involved, since no literal translation of ANY language would make sense. So go easy on them. Parts of this may not specifically be wrong, but more a matter of preference.

-Double checked in places by Akemi Imafuku.

An additional note should be made that from the original volume 12 on, the series in the Tokyopop version was termed SuperS.

If you have any additional questions about this translations and mistakes check the bottom of this sub section.

On page 129 of Sailor Moon Volume 7:
"Well, to die-hard fans who insist on having Haruka's last name translated the way Naoko-san intended, Haruka's last name is spelled 'Tenoh' by Tokyopop when it should really be Tenou. And if they're going to use Tenou, they should at least stick to it! I found two mistakes. First off, the mechanic (or whoever is talking to Haruka) is scolding her (Haruka's drawn as a guy at this time) for driving at more than 5000 MPR (miles per hour). But they spell it 'rpm' when they really meant 'mpr.' And if you look just to the right of that same speech bubble, the fans are yelling Haruka's name, both first and last. One of the fans yells 'Tenoh' while everyone else yells 'Tenou.'" - Laria Gywn

"Lemures" is spelled wrong on pages 90 and 91. They spell it "lemres."

Notes

1. Why do these "mistakes" appear?

2. How much of this is translation error?

3. How much of these mistakes are because of laziness?
None. It's usually because the new editor was not informed of the names, and the style of how the editor approaches the manga can be quite different from another. As long as there are no specific standards they are free to do as they like within the means of what their boss tells them. Often it was ignorance, not laziness.

4. How much of this is due to staff changes at Tokyopop?

5. Who does the translations for what volumes?
Stuart Levy 1-3, Anita Sengupta 4-11, [mention the drawings and plot w/o opinion] [details on odango atama]

PART VIII: Questions about manga plot elements

Are the Starlights REALLY girls in the manga?

Yes, they are always girls in the manga. In the anime they were originally girls, then shed their girl bodies for boy ones, when trying to find their Princess. They turned into their true form (girls) when transformed in the anime. But In the manga they were, are and always will be girls. (Takeuchi-sensei didn't seem pleased that Toei changed this detail)

WHO is Sailor Cosmos/ Chibichibi (same person)?

This is a hotly debated issue. The answer is that only Takeuchi-sensei really know the answer if there is one at all.. the common two beliefs are that
1. She is the Final Form of Sailor Moon
2. She is a descendant of the Moon Family.
(It should be noted that Chibichibi was never stated as Chibimoon's child, it was never disclaimed either.. Chibimoon just made a weird face and when something like "WHAT?!").
Interestingly enough there have been no fan fics on her in the future that I've seen so far. (Maybe because Sailor Moon (as we know her) and the others would be dead at that point...).
Other theories have included that Sailor Cosmos is sort of like what Tuxedo Mirage was to Tuxedo Kamen in the manga, and that Sailor Cosmos is sort of what Chibichibi was to Galaxia in the anime. (Though this might have been a slight mix up on the part of the reader). (All of these theories are fun to hear and hear supported too (with page numbers of course!)!) A large debate can arise from it. Most of the theories are variations to the final form of Sailor Moon, which was never defined) In any case, it's a good idea to entertain all possibilities until someone goes and asks Takeuchi-sensei herself (who might not even know ^^;;)
We do know what she is not:
1. She is not the second daughter of Usagi and Mamoru. (or Seiya's and Usagi's child as many fanficers wish.. O_o.. I already told you that Seiya's a girl..) (The Moon Family can only have one child)
2. She is not Sailor Chibichibimoon (unlike the anime which must have misread the manga on this part, because Chibichibi gives a face of huh? when Usagi asks this)
3. A case could be argued that she is related to the Moon Family, though this is never verified. The proof would lie in the fact that she loves to eat sweets and has lots of rabbits associated with her (rabbit pajamas, rabbit doll, rabbit clothes, etc).
4. She is NOT Tsukino Chibichibi in the manga.. that is one thing that is for sure. She got her name when Tsukino Ikuko-mama picked up a tea cup written with Chibiusa on it. Ikuko-mama was reading the tea cup on it, sad about Chibiusa being gone. and then Chibichibi repeated her. Then Ikuko repeated it, and so was born the name Chibichibi. Chibichibi brain washed her into thinking she was the youngest child in the Tsukino family. So therefore we can't really say that her family name is Tsukino. (the brain washing does sound like the first appearance of Chibiusa which may be another clue)
5. She carries a scepter. As far as I've noticed ONLY the Moon Family (with the exception of King Endymion, but he's royalty) have magical scepters for attacks.
6. She said she was blessed with Eternal Sailor Moon's power.

Isn't Queen Nephrenia the Sister of Queen Selenity in the manga, and therefore Usagi's Aunt?
Huh? Where do people get this stuff? You might have read that there was a sister kingdom on the Moon, which was a rival, but that doesn't mean that Nephrenia was related! Far from that. She just had a kingdom on the Dark side of the moon and didn't like the kingdom on the White side when she wasn't invited to Usagi's birth (but she was evil before then!)

What's with the older guys in Sailor Moon falling in love with younger girls?
OK.. If you think that was strange, think this: A 20 year old in the 1700's marrying a 50 year old, that looks like a balding wrinkling guy who looks 80 or so. That was THIS culture.. Now think about this Naru was 14 at the time that Nephlite, (looks 20) met her. 6 years difference.. what's the big deal compared to what we used to have? It's all in the culture! What's acceptable in one culture varies in the next one. (Women are a good example). As for Mamoru and Usagi in the manga.. well.. He's 18, she's about 14, 4 years? Not too bad, right? Would you make a big deal if it was 17, and 14? That's our culture, not Japan's culture. Remember, different areas, different cultures and ideals.

So, I've been getting the question: Who is Kousagi?

Let's summarize! OK, I'll use a list:

- This story found in Takeuchi-sensei's Materials Collection: Parallel Sailormoon. It does not fit into the timeline of Sailor Moon at all, and can be called a side story.

- Her father is Mamoru, her mother is Usagi, her older sister is Chibiusa.

- She's more flaky and has a bigger sweet tooth and stomach than Usagi, Chibiusa, and Chibichibi combined! (she really appreciates her food)

- You can check out her profile too!

- She has the Parallel Senshi: Rei, Mina, Mako, Ami who are her guardian senshi. (respectively Parallel Sailormars, Parallel Sailorvenus, Parallel Sailorjupiter, Parallel Sailormercury) you can also see their profiles if you click on the links.

- It's not certain when she was born. That info was never given.

- She's also Parallel Sailormoon.

OK, this is why it doesn't fit into the time stream:

- First of all in the Code Name wa Sailor V manga it was stated that the senshi could never truly fall in love, which was their curse/blessing for protecting the Princess.

- The Moon family can only have one child per Queen (not Millennium). (female)

This is why she is not the older sister of Chibiusa besides it saying "second child of the Tsukino family":

- Also if Kousagi was planned, she would have shown up at the banquet for Small Lady in volume 17.

- She would have also shown in volume 5, when the senshi go to the future.

- The senshi in the story also have children.. and those would have also shown up in the respective volumes mentioned, and probably by Small Lady.

How do the side stories fit into the Sailor Moon timeline?
They don't. They are outside of the timeline, but that does not mean you discount everything that they say about the characters.

I heard that the Sailors are from a different countries. i.e. Minako is from England, France or something.
They are all Japanese. All their parents are Japanese. Rei is a Shinto Priestess (miko) and that makes her also Japanese (Shinto being a native religion of Japan, and miko being related to the priests in most cases, and also Japanese) Although Minako went abroad to England and became Sailor V, it does not mean just because she went abroad to somewhere she is from that place. (I seriously hope when I go to Japan that I'm still Korean, with an American citizenship and am not suddenly Japanese when I return) In Code Name wa Sailor V, she travels around China for a while, but then returns to Japan. She never went to England. (someone has to do a FAQ on that series of manga too.. no one seems to bother to find out about it, and go by what they heard).

Why do they all look Caucasian (except for Rei)?
Check the anime and manga FAQ on any of the sites that deal specifically with that. The short of it is: to distinguish between characters, and because women in Japan in the early stages of manga and anime couldn't draw strong female heroines, so they made some from abroad, they eventually made them Japanese, but the trend for weird colored hair had already started. Note Michiru's hair color..

In what time does Sailor Moon start?
It's roughly the present time (which in this case would be 1992), but it's not linear timeline as most Western timelines are. Because in the span of 5 years of manga only 2 years pass. This means that it's contemporary time, but it's not a specific date (as some of my colleagues would like to think) What's even weirder is in the anime you can see the signs read "1992" in an early episode and then at the end of the series you can see a sign read "1997" even though Usagi said she was 16 at the end.. O_o; (14 at the beginning)

PART X: Possible future Tokyopop Takeuchi investments

The idea that Sailor Moon will be re-released is a promise made by everyone except Stuart Levy. While working for Tokyopop I gave a list of corrections and a suggestion to print the ink on cheaper paper for a better feel and ink absorption, I doubt this is going to happen. The cost of printing such books is high. It would take a fair amount of re-editing, permission from Kodansa to do a re-release as well as a lot of management. Also Stuart Levy, while he is a great guy and all, tends to be indecisive when it comes to putting out properties.

There are some things about the company I cannot disclose. But Stuart Levy has personally expressed interest in releasing the following properties.

Toki*Meka (Not Toki*Meca)
Sailor V
The Sailor Moon Artbooks.

This is known by association with this CEO. Any other properties are rumor and though it might be said by the staff, the decision is really made by Stuart Levy. If it is not made by him and production doesn't start immediately then it's not a reputable. Trust me on this one.

PART XIV: Where to get manga translations for free, Tokyopop, and other useful manga links.

[Alex Glover]
http://www.kurozuki.com/takeuchi
Read other Takeuchi manga too. Not all of his old translations are up.

[Tokyopop]
http://www.Tokyopoponline.com/Tokyopoponline/
[closed] This is where the first half of Sailor Moon is running in serial, but I'd rather that I get the graphic novel, and not this magazine.

[Tokyopop]
http://www.tokyopop.com/
This came after Smile. I would say Tokyopop has to push on the breaks a bit and rather than putting out new magazines, which get bad press, add to the older ones. But since I don't know this one i can't really say. All I can tells ya is It has no Sailor Moon.

[closed] This magazine printed Sailor Mon for a short run.

His FAQ is one of the best resources in the world. I use it a lot, though his opinions are not the regular moonies' he is an honest fan of Sailor Moon, or at least once was. (I'm not too clear on this).

[Hitoshi Doi]
http://www.tcp.com/doi/smoon/smoon.html
He is one of the most useful resources on Sailor Moon. He is a good source, but he does not have everything you could ever want. What he knows is on his site, and it is as far as I know all correct. (and I do my research)

[SOS]
http://www.iwaynet.net/~sos/sos.html
They shut down, moved, then went static. The Sailor Moon community cheered when they went down... I wonder why they didn't stay that way. Suffer in Hell.

[Anime News Network: report on Stu]

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com//feature/cover1.html
Ok, the editor and chief doesn't like Stu one bit, nor is he the person to ask on this issue. All of the issues are addressed that you ever want! This is true reporting! Use it to your advantage. Try to read through it if you hate them. Read it first before reading the flames if you want the scoop. Any and all questions are answered, and yes the Eye on Tokyopop doesn't have that.

Manga at this time is out of print. The only place you can get it is at Book Off Stores either in Japan or in big cities with a High Japanese population. That or find it on ebay. There might be a reprinting of the Shinsouban.

APPENDIX: Tokyopop, SOS and other Sailor Moon Organizations.

I e-mailed involved parties to track down this mystery about Sailor Moon fandom.

After the San Diego Comic Con convention, many fans got mad at Tokyopop (at the time their company name was Mixx)--or shall I say Stuart Levy. Takeuchi-sensei was invited to this convention.

The two major organizations that balked at this was Eye on Mixx and SOS. This meant that many people developed a second hand opinion of the convention without going to said convention. They both released reports about the convention and tainted many people's opinions.

But if you do more searching you can find a better more neutral report on Takeuchi-sensei at that same convention (http://www.black-kat.com/blackmoon/take.html).

Let's get this straight.

His letters mostly consist of these things:

- He did not appreciate the stunt by people that hacked into his site and redesigned it. He did not accuse in any way that SOS was part of the group. SOS, being self-centered thought this comment was directed at them.

- The taking or stealing from the fans and pocketing all the stuff himself is entirely false. This was a misreading of the report by SOS that got out of hand. He never did such things. It was more along of the lines that he was trying to do his job. Takeuchi-sensei asked him to put her gifts in boxes in the back. (this false claim is also something I saw on the Eye on Tokyopop site) He just took them a little earlier than the fans would have liked, hence the misunderstanding and feeling of abuse.

- No pages were cut from Sailor Moon. I read all of the manga. It was compulsory.

- He could only remember one bit of censorship in the Tokyopop series of manga: Iceblade. They cut for the magazine only a private part and replaced it with a snake [laugh on my part], but for the tankoubon version put back the original image.

- I asked him about the Haruka and Michiru relationship. He did say that the relationship between Haruka and Michiru will "most likely stay the same" He did know what I was talking about. (obviously since he had to translate the words "they are lovers" and "They have more time on their hands than the other senshi". And this was preserved.

- He also can only print what he's given. So anything that wasn't printed wasn't given permission to do so.

[other stuff]

SOS

Do not trust this organization. If it's not the pop tarts campaign then it's the claim of Prince Uranus. Of course the most rich thing they ever did was to say that Takeuchi-sensei hates fan mail.

Eye on Mixx This was made by a former employee of Tokyopop, Mixx at the time. Their information is questionable at best. However, here are the list of their major complaints.

1. To buy the Tankoubon is more expensive than to buy the magazines.

2. It was not clear that the tankoubon for Sailor Moon would ever come out.

3. It's expensive unless you only buy the Sailor Moon tankoubon.
