Takeuchi Naoko's Notes:

  • Green Esmeraude.
  • She's a high queen. She has an alluring, booming voice.
  • She has a large emerald bracelet and necklace.
  • Her bottom is huge.
  • Her neck is long.
  • History:

The Black Moon Manga (for convenience sake)
Esmeraude enters as a character who hangs around Demando, Saffiru, and Rubeus before she actually makes her presence known. She laughs at other people's failures and makes fun of them. She has a big crush on Prince Demando and tries to make herself look good in front of him. She offers to go on assignment to kill the senshi, but doesn't like to do the dirty work if she can help it. The first time she goes out, for example, she takes Chiral and Archiral with her and has them attack the senshi for her. After her first failure she tries again, this time utilizing the Death Hands that Wiseman gave her and doing the dirty work herself. This time she gets killed by Tuxedo Kamen.

    Anime:
Esmeraude is developed a bit more in the anime than in the manga like most villains are. She is desperately in love with Demando and wants to be his Queen and his one and only. She hates Sailormoon and Neo-Queen Serenity because Demando gives her special attention. Esmeraude eventually becomes so desperate to attract Demando that she asks for Wiseman's help. Wiseman gives her a tiara and promises that it will make her into a great queen. At first it seems to work, and Esmeraude is happy- but then it turns her into a great dragon and Sailormoon kills her.

    Personality:

    Manga:
Esmeraude does have jealousy but it isn't as explored as it is in the anime. While it is true she shows extra attention to Demando, she does it in a slightly cooler way, not nearly as desperate. While she is always looking to impress and seemed embarrassed with her failure, she didn't throw a tantrum when she lost simply offered to try again. Esmeraude in the manga is more reserved than the anime version (which isn't hard to accomplish). She is still just as haughty as she is in the anime, but she does it in a more aloof manner. When she makes a stinging remark she has the grace to blush and at least appear embarrassed.

    Anime:
Esmeraude is jealous and self-centered in the anime. She is more of a joke in the anime than in the manga. Essentially, the personality is the same, but Esmeraude seems less competent than her manga counterpart does. She throws tantrums when she loses battles and consistently blames it on everyone else. This Esmeraude seems more desperate for Demando's attention than the manga version, and it makes the fact that her affection is completely not returned more heartbreaking... or it would if she wasn't such a crazy, jealous, and catty woman.

    NA Dub:
Oh my. This character is one of the more annoyingly voiced baddies, but in a weird way it does suit her jealous and self-centered streak. Still, it is a far cry from Takeuchi's "alluring booming voice". It is voiced a bit more... shrill and booming with very little allure. The character is essentially the same, but the voicing definitely changes things.

    Why They Were So Evil!:
One reason: Jealousy is the green-eyed monster, and so was Esmeraude. Esmeraude was jealousy embodied, and that poisoned her to the core.
