History:
Manga He only showed up for one series: Dream. But that doesn't mean with Takeuchi-sensei's quick characterization that he didn't develop at all as a character for the entire series. You got more of a sense of who he was, how much he was willing to sacrifice for his mission and to save Earth. In a lot of ways he is not Mamoru which would be the first comparison that people would make. Though he fell under a curse and had to live in his favorite horse's body.
Also to note.. Elios and Helios are under debate. It can be spelled either way as I see it. The H in Greek is aspirated and therefore in modern Greek writing often the H is dropped completely, however, in past writing it's not. This means that the H is barely heard, it is interesting to also note that the Seiyuu were pretty good at getting the h to be aspirated.
Anime:
The history for Elios is a little different in the anime than the manga. For one he does turn into a pegasus. The anime also shows that he permanently has the horn on top of his head, except when it turns into the crystal only in Elysion.. O_o; What a weird rule. It shows more of the fight with him and Neherenia. It shows some of Elysion. But his history is a bit sketchy as it were. There is a eensy weensy bit more background info in the manga than anime. The anime doesn't really explain his role in Elysion or how he got there, though it does explain the connections and keeps most of the basic facts straight.
Personality:
Manga:
He is separate from Pegasus. (Pegasus is his favorite horse). His horn also disappears and the golden crystal was discovered when Helios dies and Chibiusa mourns for him. (It looks VERY different from a horn, sort of like a water lily only gold.)
Anime:
It's much like the manga. He is kind gentle, and very, very determined. But he is more prone to giving advice to Chibiusa than he is in the manga. He also seems to be more of a mentor and companion rather than a lover [in the old fashioned sense]. He does learn in the anime, and it's apparent, however, most of the lessons he learns are from Chibiusa's experiences, and most of those experiences in turn are the kind that you would want little children to learn. This means that in the manga he seems older somehow.
I also have to add Matsuno Taiki's voice melts me every time I hear it! *sighs* It adds so much to the character when you have the right voice! It's exactly as I expected it to be and more! He has a really nice range and expression. ^_^
NA Dub
I heard the voice and the first thing I thought was NOOOOOO! No! You did not do that to my beautiful Elios. I was so tempted not to watch it! *sniffles* He now sounds like he's 20-30 years old! It sounds sick for most of the season until you see that he looks 14.. *sniffles louder* Why couldn't they get a voice that sounded about 14 or at least in their teens.. *sighs* They did after all get someone really good to voice Rini! ^_^ I feel bad for Helios.. He could of had such a nice voice.. like the voice for Lei in Card Captors... or one of the Gundam voices.. (except maybe Duo) I would have even stood for Tenchi's voice... but it got murdered! --;; Helios / Elios will never be the same in my head again.
Why He is So Cool!:
I like him for his tenacity. He's very sweet and gentle, considerate, wise and very helpful. (of the supporting characters is one of the most helpful.. cats aside) He also endures a lot, and unlike his Prince he doesn't brainwash easily.. and doesn't give into evil. In the manga his romance between Chibiusa and him is sweet and doesn't seem to be one bit like the girl falling in love with a horse image that you get in the anime. (in another words she wants to be friends with him at first, and then falls for him when he expresses his feelings with a kiss! *sniff* a sweet moment! [One of the sweetest in the manga]) I also love the way he gives respect to people and calls Small Lady, "My Small Maiden" Since he is Chibiusa's prince he eagerly awaits the day when she will become a true lady. (*sigh*, nice too. Too bad so many of the nice looking, considerate guys in SM are taken!) He protects a land of dreams. Now, how many of you would love that as a day job?
My Tribute Poem to this Magnificent Character:
Helios, priest/ called Elios by some
guarding the golden land of dreams
Elysion the old golden Kingdom
In side a small maiden's dream
You guard it with a will
gentle, wise and kind
two priestesses, maenads
to help you on your way.
Your maiden will grow
surprised at your loyal love
you will be her prince one day
Princess and Prince
It is you that seams
to protect the earth
and our dreams of beauty
to protect us from our fears
to preserve the hope we carry
for a bright and happy future
Priest Helios
