She's an artist type, and the type who can get by without men. She's frightening when angry.

Who knows what she's thinking.

But she has a kindness as great as the sea.

It feels kind of like Esmeraude became calm.

History:

Infinity Manga (for convenience sake)
The first time we see her is at a distance. The graceful and soft Michiru. Then as an artist, also soft and gentle. It's only when we see her as Sailor Neptune, crossing her arms and flipping hair to one side that we realize that maybe she isn't as gentle as she looks. In fact she is ruthless (and scary when angry). Distant from everyone except Haruka, we slowly realize that she values Haruka and her mission over everything else. We are not introduced to her history besides that she was not supposed to be reincarnated like the others. I, personally, believe that she and Haruka were awakened by Queen Selenity. It is also indicated that she has been fighting evil a long time with Haruka. So much so that they are both partners and lovers. (said blank straight many times by Takeuchi-sensei, can't stand it? Too bad.)

Her history is revealed as Neptune in the Moon Kingdom, which is entirely lacking in the anime. I won't tell what was discovered, because that's too many spoilers and it's my civic SM otaku duty to get you to buy volume 10!

Her history is not really revealed as much as added to later in the series. Despite this character development is managed.

The Dream Manga (for convenience sake)
She is raising Hotaru with Haruka and Setsuna in a big beautiful Victorian Empire house. (shows Takeuchi-sensei has taste!) She has made vows to stay until Hotaru grows and has a promise ring that tell of this. In this series she gets new powers and tell of her dream. Her character is developed, but not as much as the Inners. I believe that Takeuchi-sensei wants to outers to seem distant, an the best way to do that is not get to know them as well as the Senshi from the Inner Solar System.

The Stars Manga (for convenience sake)
Oops, she died putting up the outer shield system that she was planning on making with Pluto and Uranus, but don't worry, she comes back.. eventually. The cool thing about this is that we learn abut the history of her castle, and even get to see it! ^_^ So we learn a bit more about her history as Sailor Neptune.

Anime: Michiru's history in the anime is extended in some places that it was not in the manga. The anime chose to show her school life more than her past life, which is the entire opposite in the manga. The manga gives what made her fall in love with Haruka, and bits and pieces of how she became a Sailor Solider. It also gives what her super-cool School Uniform looked like back in the day and who introduced her. The anime also tends to up play some of the stereotypes surrounding homosexuality.. which I guess is to appeal to the girl audience. However, Michiru, while she tends to flirt with guys much more heavily in the anime, is entirely loyal to Haruka.

Personality:

Manga:
She's the graceful senshi of Neptune and the sea. She is a woman of great beauty and grace. She can play the violin and paint beautifully. She is a very mature character. She acts older than her actual age. It may be because she's been a sailor soldier in this life more than anyone else (anime only). She also has the confidence that Ami-chan seems to lack.

She has expensive tastes in about everything. She has expensive clothes, goes to an expensive school, she has her own helicopter, and antique china for tea (manga).

She is indicated to love Haruka, but they never really kiss in either the manga or the anime. (the closest in the manga is pg 29 of volume 8) Naoko said that they were lovers, so get over it. Michiru seems to deny her relationship with Haruka to others, but that may be because that is part of her character. She does tease Haruka about their relationship occasionally.

She has a great amount of insight, even more than Rei-chan. Occasionally she will even use this insight and intuition to tease Haruka, even if it doesn't effect Haruka much. The mirror enhances this (the names are different in the anime and the manga, so I'll leave it at the mirror.)

She is far from perfect though. She can be very competitive, and likes a fair match. She hates to lose to anyone. She will also sacrifice the world and herself so Haruka will live. Her reasoning? A world without Haruka isn't worth living in! (Honto kawaii!) She also tends to hide her imperfections with the artistic streak she has. She has a lot of hidden depth, who knows what else is there.

Anime:

NA Dub
Michelle came off a bit breathy, thus sounded bit more haughty, and in another light, plain motherly at times. The edge that can be achieved with Michiru was not entirely shown in Michelle. Because of this Michelle tended to come off more aloof than Michiru, and though elegant, Michelle lacked the same sophistication that can be found in Michiru. The separation between arrogance and having a sense of style was not specified in the voicing. The voice wa right for the part, but the direction seemed to be lacking in the voicing.

Why She is So Cool!:
Michiru is very beautiful (especially in the manga *_*). She is strong-minded, and goal-oriented.

She's wonderful at playing string instruments (she even in the manga has a violin that's a Stradivarius name "Marine Cathedral" after the temple of the sea!). (I was always a sucker for the sound of the violin)

Some might say she has a lot of talent -.^ and very mature ^.-. (uhh.. inside joke.. don't know it forget about it..)

Her character really personifies the sea, which is her element. Her hair is after all in soft waves. She is a very good swimmer. How can you really go wrong with the sea? Haven't you ever sat in the sand, doing nothing and just watched the sea, smelled the sea, and listened to the sea. You could really get dazed and lost in it.
